Is homocysteine elevated in folate deficiency?

Homocysteine has a direct toxic effect on n-methyl-D-aspartic glutamate receptors in the central nervous system. Dietary supplement with L-Methylfolate may be effective in reducing elevated homocysteine levels and reduce direct toxic and side effects on the nervous system.

Vitamin B₁₂ or folate deficiency can cause the homocysteine level to rise. Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is an important potential risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, depression, senile dementia and other diseases.
