Is homocysteine elevated in folate deficiency?

release time:2021-09-09

Homocysteine has a direct toxic effect on n-methyl-D-aspartic glutamate receptors in the central nervous system. Dietary supplement with L-Methylfolate may be effective in reducing elevated homocysteine levels and reduce direct toxic and side effects on the nervous system.

Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency can cause the homocysteine level to rise. Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is an important potential risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, depression, senile dementia and other diseases. Therefore, folic acid levels also should be checked in patients with isolated hyperhomocysteinemia.
