What is Magnafolate®? Folate VS Folic Acid, What's the Difference?

release time:2021-09-14

5-MTHF is an active, naturally occurring form of folate. It’s an essential B vitamin that supports metabolism. Many people don’t get sufficient 5-MTHF because they have intestinal or liver dysfunction or because of their genetic deficiency which makes it difficult to convert folic acid into active 5-MTHF. A deficiency of folic acid has been linked to low-birth-weight infants and neural tube defects, which is reason that Centers for Disease Control recommends folate supplement for all women of childbearing age.

Calcium L-5-MTHF is a synthetic derivative of folic acid, the predominant, naturally occurring form of folate.

Magnafolate® is a patent trademark of C-crystal form of calcium salt L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (CAS No. 151533-22-1) by Jinkang Pharma, produced under US Patent No. 9,150,982

Here are some key points you should note In regards to L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium (Magnafolate) vs Folic Acid and other folate ingredients are as follows:

VS Folic Acid

  •  >30% of the global population cannot metabolize Folic Acid into Folate due to a genetic mutation, while L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium bypasses this metabolism mutation and is easily absorbed
  •  Without Folate during pregnancy this 30% of the population is prone to neural tube defects among other birth defects
  •  Folate is digested in the liver and the liver system can allow for unmetabolized Folic Acid to spill over into the blood
  •  Unmetabolized Folic Acid under prolonged use can lead to health issues
  •  Unmetabolized Folic Acid has shown to increase birth defects in a study our manufacturer will be releasing in 2021

VS other folate ingredients

  •  FDA NDI 920 registered
  •  Self Affirmed GRAS
  •  Magnafolate PRO is the Chinese standard for L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium
  •  highest content L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (>85%)
  •  Patent protected C- Crystal
  •  40% higher folate content than glucosamine salt
  •  Better dissolution than I-crystal form calcium salt
  •  3 years stability at room temperature
